Activision Announces More Call Of Duty This Holiday

If you finally get sick of Modern Warfare 2 come winter, Activision has you covered: Call of Duty 7 will be ready for the holiday season. Kotaku is reporting that in today's quarterly earnings call, Activision Blizzard claimed it will "continue annualizing" the FPS cash cow.

In the same call, CEO Bobby Kotick hinted that there may be a subscription fee in Call of Duty's future, stating, "If you think about the successes we have had in other categories on subscriptions, you can get a sense of the direction we want to take that franchise."

So, how excited are you about a new Call of Duty game every year, possibly with a monthly subscription plan attached: very excited, super excited, or very super excited?

no thanks

It has been reported and somewhat confirmed that there will be dedicated servers.

Let the modding return.

I think we should be able to do things with the server code as we did on COD5 before there were any mod tools.

Like extra mine fields and teleporters etc.

I can't wait to get back in the game with Treyarch.

I think IW and COD6 let many with a bad taste.  I know I did not give them one dime of my money.

I cant say I am all that excited, I wasn't a huge fan of WaW with the countless errors trying to play the game with a premium rig. As Creeper noted ..among the rumors is talk about a subscription system ala World of Warcraft. I think Back Op's might just be one more nail in the coffin. I was one of the many that canceled my MW2 pre-order. This game wont get a pre-order to start out. Hats off the the extreme Team for keeping Cod4 interesting. :)

Tuesday 18-May-2010 1:02 PM Console dedicated servers no go; But matchmaking to be improved

Treyarch has detailed their intentions for Call of Duty: Black Ops' multiplayer. Although dedicated servers are unlikely to make their way into the console versions, the developer is hard at work on matchmaking.

In response to a Black Ops wish list from YouTube user Blame Truth, Treyarch multiplayer design director David Vonderhaar ("Vahn") has detailed the studio's views on a number of raised issues.

There have been numerous complaints about Modern Warfare 2's multiplayer, such as its dodgy peer-to-peer matchmaking. EA's Battlefield Bad Company 2 solves such woes with dedicated servers, but so far Activision has been reluctant to match this with Call of Duty.

This isn't going to change any time soon as far as the console versions are concerned. However, as previously reported, PC gamers can breathe easy. Dedicated servers will make their return with Black Ops. On this issue Vohn writes:

"The cost/reward structure of dedicated servers for console games is as complicated as All Get Out. I am not talking about PC games. That's a different, and much easier, conversation. My point is simply that, that error you think is lag is not necessarily caused by latency, and dedicated servers won't solve every perceived error you think is lag."

In reference to peer-to-peer hosting, Vohn explains that the studio has a number of specific ideas to improve host selection:

"Until you can build a profile/library of who is a good host and who is not, the first couple of times someone ends up host, he is going to be as good of a host as anyone else. The game can't see into the future. His connection might have been awesome at the time host selection was made," Vohn comments.

He adds that the studio prefers the "'make matchmaking as fast as possible' approach," avoiding check box criteria that would up make the matchmaking process even slower.

As far as the ability to select multiplayer map preferences before entering matchmaking, which is reminiscent of Call of Duty 2's options, Treyarch has apparently created a system that is "more simple and requires active participation" for Black Ops.

Weapon balance was something Call of Duty fans thought both Treyarch and Infinity Ward have got wrong. World at War's weapons were too difficult for new players, and Modern Warfare 2's were too easy. The studio hopes to readdress the balance in Black Ops. Vohn explains:

"Black Ops is trying to find some place between the skill of World at War weapons with the accessibility of MW2 weapons. Easy to use, difficult to master. I added a guy to my team this year, who is working on this nearly full-time. We are committed to this idea and committed to fixing what we don't get right."

It's good news that Treyarch is taking so much care to listen to community feedback, with Vohn adding that Black Ops has "features that require more post-launch support than ever before." Gamers won't be left in the lurch.

Great post Creeper, I hate to be the negative Neil here, but are they waiting for the week before release to tell us about the subscription program like they did with MW2 and dedicated servers. Otherwise it all sounds pretty good. :)

I can't wait,  there maybe life for the WaW X5 mod yet,  given that Black ops and WaW are both Treyarch... if they release mod tools,  which I would believe they would... The base code is problably WaW with new graphics and weapons.  Even without mod tools there are some .ff extract programs available. We can probably convert the latest X5 3.0 that I was working on with Joker to get all COD 2 and COD 4 functions available.

One of the major rewrites within the X5 mod was to make all the weapons were possible controlled via csv files... so apart from all the DVArs settings for loadouts the conversion should be a snap...

The more I read about this the more excited I am getting,  LONG LIVE THE MODDERS AND EXTREME RULES  :D !

I have a feeling that dedi servers will come at a price tho

i think all servers will not be as flexable as cod4 ,in the way we layout our servers
and i think maybe , they wont release mod tools
but on a brighter note
they probably will patch it to death with new maps every now and then

i think they realised their mistakes from mw2 but , still want to control us, and not let us have the freedom we have with cod4 ..

i hope my feelings are wrong and they do a complete uturn and give us pc  gamers what we demand .

after all if it wasnt for modders like extreme crew and the work thats went on cod4 x4, then iw wouldve run out of ideas already..
just look at mw2 .. complete rip off from x4..

Activision Must Start Charging for Call of Duty Online Play, says Pachter

Posted July 15, 2010 by James Brightman

Following the recent NPD sales report, which revealed software sales plummeting 15% for the month of June, Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter tried to figure out exactly what the heck has been going on. June marks the fourth negative month of decline this year, but why?

Pachter said part of the problem stems from Nintendo now bundling two games in with the Wii, and many consumers buying clearance software with their new, cheaper Xbox 360s. The bigger issue, however, is the rise of online multiplayer gaming, which obviously gives any game more replay value, which in turn means that those players are less inclined to go out and buy new software.

"...we think that the overall decline was due to a very large number of people playing multiplayer online games for free on PlayStation Network, and for an annual fee with unlimited game play on Xbox Live," Pachter noted. "We estimate that a total of 12 million consumers are playing Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 for an average of 10 hours per week on the two platforms’ respective networks, and the continued enjoyment of this game (along with an estimated 6 million Halo online players, 3 million EA Sports players, and 5 million players playing other games, such as Battlefield, Red Dead Redemption, Left 4 Dead and Grand Theft Auto) has sucked the available time away from what otherwise would be spent playing newly purchased games."

He continued, "We see this as a continuing problem, and think that unless and until the publishers come up with a business model that appropriately captures the value created by the multiplayer experience, we are destined to see a migration of game playing away from packaged goods purchases and toward multiplayer online. While the shift has been great for consumers, who are enjoying an unprecedented, and largely free, game experience, it has been devastating for publishers and shareholders, who are seeing sales and profits decline."

Ultimately, Pachter says Activision will have to lead by example and push the industry and its online games in the paid direction. Gamers will not like it one bit, but if the experience is as compelling as Modern Warfare 2, then gamers will probably pay. Pachter's advice is no doubt music to Bobby Kotick's ears, who's already said that he'd like to turn the entire Call of Duty business into a subscription.

"We think that it is incumbent upon Activision, with the most popular multiplayer game, to take the first step to address monetization of multiplayer. It is too early to tell whether that will be a monthly subscription, tournament entry fees, microtransaction fees, or a combination of all three, but we expect to see the company take some action by year-end, when Call of Duty Black Ops launches," Pachter commented.

"The company has the greatest experience of the Western publishers with multiplayer subscriptions, given its huge success with World of Warcraft, and we expect Activision to apply a WoW-type model to its Call of Duty franchise. It is likely that Activision will ease the pain of consumers, and will continue to offer some form of free multiplayer, at least for a while, but we believe it is imperative that the company begin to capture some value from the huge number of hours spent – 1.75 billion hours on Xbox Live alone through mid-April, and we estimate that this figure is approaching 4 billion hours combined through today on Xbox Live and PSN. We are quick to point out that the average single player game has an expected play time of under 30 hours, suggesting that a staggering 133 million units of equivalent game play have been spent (so far) playing Call of Duty online, with Activision only seeing revenues from the original 20 million units sold, plus an estimated 8 million map packs sold."

I am a little worried about the beta release if they decide to go that route to the general public.  BC2 beta was just plain bad and MOH is not looking very promising yet.  Seems to me that they put the beta out there in such a disarray that when people play it, they decide at that point that they like or dislike it.  Also, I wonder if it gives the hackers a leg up.  I read that when BC2 beta came out it was hacked in just a few days.
Not sure I am wanting to see a beta or not.  Maybe just complete the game and release it would be better.
