Ok, let me know

You asked for it.

I removed all traces of 2.3 from my server.  I checked all the clients for any odd mod files in the main directory - nothing there.  I downloaded the Advanced Setup package this time (before I was using Client/Server), and extracted all the files into a directory on my Linux server (as I've done every update since 1.4 or so).  The Linux server has been running 2.2 happily for months.

All the files and directories you mentioned were in place.  I changed *nothing* in any of the config files, except to turn off the WWW redirection, and to change the 'dedicated' flag from 2 (internet) to 1 (LAN).  No other changes to the out-of-the-box settings.  ie the only changed settings were in server.cfg and were:

Code: [Select]
set dedicated "2"
set sv_allowdownload "1"
seta sv_wwwDownload "0"

I connected a 'clean' (ie no v2.3 extreme+ on it) client to the server.  It immediately went to the download screen where it normally downloads .iwd files, custom maps etc.  It sat there at "Time Remaining:  Estimating" for about a minute or so, doing nothing.  It then bombed back to the main menu with the following error:

Quote
Error:
CL_ParseGamestat: bad command byte (GameState may exceed MAX_GAMESTATE_CHARS, or packet may exceed MAX_MSGLEN)

Alrighty.  Taking note of that, I copy the extremev2.3.iwd file (13.5MB) from the server to the appropriate subfolder of the client's COD2 directory (as I have done with many other versions).  I try to connect again, the map loading screen appears, the progress bar fills... and then it fills again, and again - as detailed in my previous posts.

Now obviously one isn't going to run a server using the default out-of-the-box settings, but given that it's not getting as far as the game proper, I can't imagine that it needs any other configuration files dealt with beyond server.cfg, if that.  Again, since every version up until now has been so bombproof, I don't really know where to start looking.

I hope something of this can direct your investigations somehow.

Well, I did almost exactly what you did

Windows Server
eXtremev2.3 unzipped and put in an fs_game folder
editted the server.cfg to allow downloads ((cause I have to *L*))

Started the server

76.166.240.165:28960 eXtreme+ v2.3

Connected, downloaded the IWD, map loaded, progress bar filled, picked a team, picked 2 weapons, and was in the map running around

Okay, well let me add some more, just in case it helps.

When I fire up the server on the Linux box, I get the following that I've never seen happen before (especially on v2.2):

Bear in mind this is without changing anything from out-of-the-box apart from what I mentioned earlier.  Apart from that mess, it all seems to be otherwise normal.  Hopefully it will tell someone something.

BINGO

Info string length exceeded

Add up all the characters from the IWD's and it is too many

Remove ALL maps from the main, and it should fire right up with no problems.

Then slowly add maps 1 at a time until you get this error again

I've not had a chance to test it properly, but removing the custom maps certainly got rid of the gobbledegook upon startup, and the one client machine I've tested at least started downloading the .iwd file...

Sounds like a winner.   :D   If not, you'll be sure to hear about it - but otherwise, thankyou for your persistence.

[update]  Tested.  Works.  Rocks.  Thankyou.

Info string length exceeded!

I installed 2.3 on my test server (which is an exact copy of my clan's 2.2 server) and had to delete 10 of my 22 custom maps to get it to start.

I could be wrong but you need to be aware that there is room for only 11 custom maps in 2.3

Well, I used to run up to 28 maps (without mappacks).  So I  loaded 2.3 on my test server and I get the info string exceeded error with 13 maps.

It seems that extreme now references iw_08.iwd which eats up the info string?

If I don't delete iw_01 and iw_02 I only get  11 single character maps.

The question is: Can we get some info string space back by deleting some 2.3 features? Or are we lilmited to 11-13 custom maps?

I guess we all need to get good at making mappaks.

iw_08.iwd

I thought it was strange that v2.3 would reference this and not v2.2 or earlier.  But when I checks my logs for v2.0, v2.1, and v2.2 -- they all reference iw_08.iwd in the String count.

iw_08.iwd have some AI stuff, character GSC's, and images

If you are right, simple solution would be to find what it is referencing too, and put that in your extremev2.3.iwd

Will have to investigate this more

When I have only one satchel I'm still able to plant a tripwire. It does use two satchels even when I have one.

Second, I've noticed the ammo load out can quite get big even when I disable the extra nades when promoting. When the player respawns it's getting the right ammount of ammo.

Great mod people! Nice to see it released so fast! Keep up the great work :D

A little more info:

I thought it was iw_08 and here is why:

Set up 2 fs_game directories with no custom maps. One for 2.2 and one for 2.3. Here are the results for the sv_referencedIwdsNames:

From 2.3

"sv_referencedIwdNames" is: "k_3/x main/iw_13 main/iw_08 main/iw_07 main/iw_06 main/iw_03" default: ""

From 2.2

"sv_referencedIwdNames" is: "k_x/x_mod main/iw_13 main/iw_07 main/iw_06 main/iw_03" default: ""

2.3 has one extra referenced iwd and it is iw_08.iwd

Can you post your nade loadout settings please?

All nades and satchel charges (including specials and smoke replacements) have SharedAmmoCap\3. You shouldn't be able to pick up nades if the carry more than three.

Some settings that might help:

Weaponcontrol.cfg:
Code: [Select]

set ex_wepo_class "0"
set ex_wepo_team_only "1"
set ex_wepo_allow_grenades "3"
set ex_wepo_loadout "1"
set ex_wepo_secondary "0"
set ex_frag_loadout "1"
set ex_smoke_loadout "1"
set ex_fire_grenades "1"
set ex_american_smoke "9"
set ex_british_smoke "9"
set ex_russian_smoke "9"
set ex_german_smoke "9"

Ranksystem.cfg
Code: [Select]
set ex_rank_points_1 "10" //Corporal
set ex_rank_points_2 "20" //Sergeant
set ex_rank_points_3 "30" //Lieutenant
set ex_rank_points_4 "40" //Captain
set ex_rank_points_5 "50" //Major
set ex_rank_points_6 "60" //Colonel
set ex_rank_points_7 "75" //General
set ex_ranksystem "1"
set ex_rank_score "1"

set ex_rank_smoke_0 "0"
set ex_rank_smoke_1 "0"
set ex_rank_smoke_2 "1"
set ex_rank_smoke_3 "1"
set ex_rank_smoke_4 "0"
set ex_rank_smoke_5 "2"
set ex_rank_smoke_6 "1"
set ex_rank_smoke_7 "2"

When I just play CTFB and get the flag and score. The nade loadout is as following:
Rank nr napalm satchels
Rank 0 - 0 - 0
Rank 1 - 1 - 0
Rank 2 - 2 - 0
Rank 3 - 1 - 2
Rank 4 - 2 - 0
Rank 5 - 0 - 4

One other thing I've noticed. When you have a knife fight with about 4 people it creates lots of lag. Had the same problem with v2.2.
We only use knives and nades. Nades are working very well now concerning lag.

set ex_rank_promo_addnades 0"

You see the missing quote? It should read "0". Is that a typo in your post only, or do you have the typo in your cfg as well? Default for promo_addnades is ON ("1"), which could explain the added nades.
